Yankees acquire Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte

We’ve been hammering away to track this one down for the better part of an hour, but now that there’s a second to pop up for air, here’s the breakdown of tonight’s trade:

YANKEES GET
OF Xavier Nady
LHP Damaso Marte

PIRATES GET
OF Jose Tabata
RHP Ross Ohlendorf
RHP George Kontos
LHP Phil Coke

Back with more to talk about later.

It happens. sometimes the thing locks up and you think you press submit, then it doesn’t load, so you press it again….Voila! double post

Oh crap, sorry for the double post, I’m not sure how I pulled that one off lol.

I heard the Red Sox were actively pursuing Marte as well. If that’s true, that’s just an added bonus to us, that we were able to keep him off the Sox. I really really really like this trade. I think this makes us a much better team, and if they can transfer their NL success to the Yankees, we’re going to be very tough to beat.

I would like to see the Yanks take a look at some starting pitching. I don’t think we need a catcher with the acquisition of Nady, Molina and Moeller are more than capable of being solid backstops, obviously more so on the defensive end but I can take the trade off. Kennedy pitched a solid game in AAA, but I think he needs to stay there for the rest of the season. I know Brian Bruney will be back in a little bit, and he can take over LaTroy Hawkins’ spot in the pen for sure. I think Robertson and Giese have earned the chance to stay on the team for a little while longer. Wang and Hughes are slated to be back in late August/September, but can we really bank on them coming back and being in prime form?

um, I goofed…Nady IS getting traded. DUH….I meant he was actually getting playing time.

He’s going to be a good addition to this lineup…so is marte.

Like

melky is a good ball player…but he and Nady are both totally different. They aren’t the “same player”!!!

in 2007 X-man had 20 hrs in 430 at bats. Melk-man? 8 in 530 ABs….how are they the same player???? Melky played in 25 more games then X and he had the same RBIs as him…same player?? Nady’s slugging this year: .535….Cabrera: .348….348!!!!!! Nady has 10 OF assists in 82 games in RF….melky? 5 in 99….still think they are the same player????? C’mon! where are you getting your stats from???

Melky NEVER slugged over .400…Nady? EVERY YEAR since 2004 he slugged .400+ same player? you sure about this one, cross777? Positive…?

and finally, you are making such a big deal over Melky’s stolen bases…ok, lets take a look at these stolen bases: he has 7 this year. 7!!!! and he had 13 last year, in 150games, and 12 the year before. WOW!!!! thats SO productive!!

Nady is a better Offensive player then Melky. I like Melky….but I ain’t batting him behind Giambi.

Like

sorry-melky batted 273 in 2007 and 280 in 2006…woopie.

Like

he’s having a career year because he’s getting AB’s and not getting traded.

Like

um, no better then Melky? Melky never hit 20 homers. He never batted over .270. Melky has been in the league for like 2 years.
Nady is a MUCH better offensive player then Melk. MUCH better.

Um, this is what I hate. Did you even LOOK at Nady and Cabrera’s stats? Before posting nonsense, make sure you get your facts straight.

Like

Nady is having a career year, on a bad team, in a bad league, and he doesn’t play Left Field. In 2007 he played just 10 games in left…

Nady is no better than Melky for his career, and has less stolen bases and out field assists in what 3 or 4 more years than Melky.

Now then, here come the Yankee haters who are going to bitch that we got this deal done for less that what other teams were offering. THIS is why it’s good to be a Yankee fan. THIS is why it’s awesome to be allied with the evil empire. Stick a day like today in your pipe and smoke it, Red Sox fan! We WILL see October baseball. Bank it.

Like

DUDE. Cashman with the BLOCKBUSTER trade!!!!! He freaking STOLE those 2 guys! Ohlendorf, Tabata and some scrubs? This is the best day of the season for us so far! We shut out the Sox. We get Nady and Marte basically for FREE, and we didn’t sign Bonds to get our bat!!!!!!! I’m so happy right now I could punch a baby!!!!!!!!!!!

I’ll post again in a few after I get all of these stories done. For right now I love this trade for the Yankees. They’re a much better team tonight (or whenever this *officially* comes down) than they were this afternoon. I covered Nady during his brief time with the Mets and they’re going to love him in this clubhouse.

Like

Phil Coke started tonight at Trenton. He faced 4 batters in the 1st inning, 1 walk and 3 SOs, then left the game. I was thinking he was becoming our best farm left handed starter over Chase Wright! And Pittsburgh is so loaded with left handed starters!

he is going to break out. If he could get 600, he’ll have good numbers. He’s a solid ballplayer who has a lot to offer.

AND we can go rt-lt-rt-lt in this lineup.

I Like it!

Like

lineup:

damon
jeter
Abreu
A-Rod
Giambi
Nady
Cano
Cabrera
Molina

Thats not bad!!!

Like

Nady had almost 60 RBIS….ON THE PIRATES!!!!….imagine what he can do for us….

Like

Nady will be ok. I just saw his stats, and if he can get 600 AB he could hit 30 Hrs and drive in 100. I think he is a good fit for this lineup. He is better then his .280 career average.

we need one more pitcher…

This is a GREAT trade. Nady is a fine tooled player and Marte is fine….

Good Job to Cashman.

I was following Jose for a while the best of luck to him aswell as Ross and little toots’. Thas a lucky seven Bryan first speed bump no damage done. I can’t see Wakefield soping the train tomorrow we’ll see……………..go bombers!

Like

I think washburn would work as the #4…oh, BTW-the Yanks have the second best defense in the AL.

IF, and only IF, they play the way they played in the past week, they’ll win this whole thing and bring 27 to the stadium as a send off…..

Like

One word of caution. Tabata hasn’t passed his physical yet!

Like

Tabata is a head case. Nady is 29 and could have some really productive seasons with the yankees. I see them keeping him and seeing where it goes.

The Mets got perez for him…

Like

Bravo! Gotta give Cash the nod on this one, excellent and timely move! I donna care where they put ‘em, it bolsters our lineup and our pen, both of which we’ve really needed. #5 is really your only worry at this point, and maybe catcher.

With the Wang’er coming back on the horizon that’s not a bad staff with the way guys have stepped up and stopped-gapped. Wang, Pettitte, Chamberlain, Moose, and slot-em… Ras, Pontoon, Hughes, Kennedy, either one can’t hurt us too bad without being able to bring on the other…

Fabulous performance by Joba du Hutt and Mo Money. Big props to Giambino for executing on the shift… nothing else to show offensively but with Beckett out of the way and no W for him, that mean we can t-off on Wakefield and maybe get Lester… this one was the hardest!

Like

BRYAN,

I would love to get your take on this trade.

Like

Tabata is sick…its gunna eventually bite them in the *** because he will be amazing…but the Yanks live for the present, and i love the move.

Like

you think it took him long enough to throw out Lowell?

They were calling those pitches strikes all night-ALL NIGHT. thats exactly the same spot that rodriguez struck out on.

The Red Sox are a bunch of cry babies and i am SO sick of them.

3 games back now. Read it and weep.

Now we take one of the next two, we got a shot in the arm from Nady/Marte, and we are hitting our stride. this is a team that now is prepared for the stretch run with this deal.

Good job, cash. Lets see if it pays off….

OK. I can breath again! Only bad news is ATL 8 PHI 2.

Gardener is better than Christian.
Olney: Nady at left, Giambi at 1B against lefties, Sexson to bench.

Lowell scares me in this spot.

Farnsworth shold have left that ball alone. It was going foul.

YAY! YAY!!! YAY!!!!
