Winning one the hard way

molina.jpgThe Yankees finished up yesterday afternoon with the shadows creeping across the big ballyard in the Bronx, hanging around a lot later than we thought … four hours and forty-five minutes, to be exact, or just five minutes less than the All-Star Game took on Tuesday.

It ended in unorthodox fashion, with Jose Molina taking a cutter off of his right knee, but a hit-by-pitch never hurt so good for the Yankees. Molina carried his bat all the way to first base before being mobbed by his teammates; they’ve won two of two since the All-Star break and will try for the series sweep this afternoon against the A’s.

Never mind that they left 21 men on base — pay no attention to the elephant in the room. Joe Girardi said the win was the most important thing, and if they can strand less than a dozen against All-Star Justin Duchscherer, they might be able to do OK.

Johnny Damon said that he’s made it clear to the Yankees that he’s ready to hit, but it looks like they’re thinking about giving him another day and activating him – maybe – against the Twins. Damon is strictly a DH right now, as he hasn’t thrown yet. … Expect to see Molina behind the plate Sunday after Jorge Posada bruised the meaty part of his right hand blocking a ball. …

I totally agree with you Matt. I think we might be able to get away with 3 new players, but you are dead-on with your comments.

Ponson is 10-2 career v. the Twins. That’s comforting.

I would trade a series sweep by Boston every season for a World Championship. The season series is nice, but World Series births/wins are what “counts” for me.

Starting Pitching strength will be gauge on how the Yankees play againist, the whitesox, redsox, twins, angels and tigers on the road. The big innings and the long ball is on the decline. Good base running, running down those balls hit in the power alleys, in other words play fundermental baseball. There are not any super teams in either league. A lot of parity.

Pedroia’s just not as polished with his canned-responses Chaz!

Jete is way too professional to tell us/the media his true opinion. Sometimes that’s a double-edged sword but it’s one I can live with. We know, they know, that’s all that matters. ;)

Very impressed by the sweep, I believe this makes our 5th 3-game series sweep of the year and the first one to a team above .500 in the standings (Seattle twice, Houston and Colorado was it?). That’s a good sign. We didn’t break out much for bats yesterday but thank goodness Pettitte was his masterful self.

I’m not sure yet if Minnesota’s recent run in the standings has been due to sub-.500 matchups or not, but they’ve been on a tear lately and their staff has been pitching well.

ARod will hit at least one HR in this series… bank it, he’s been doing well at the Met for the last several years.

I’ll have to look and see if Pontoon boat got a start against the Twinkies while he was still in Texas… see what his line was.

We’re right in the mix, not sure if we have enough yet to take over first and holdoff the contendahs… but at least we’re not Baltimore or Toronto!

We’re actually at a good spot, the stupid writers have written us off… and here we are… Keep the focus off of us as long as possible as far as I’m concerned.

Boston may have the rest of the league’s number, but I believe the Yankees still hold favor in this rivalry… especially where it counts, w’s in the season series.

Still some holes and concerns but you have to like our position right about now.

4.5 games out, we’re pitching well (still not hitting), and the Rays and Sox are tailspinning out of control. This could get interesting VERY quickly. Naturally, the ESPN crowd is still all over Boston and the Rays like their crap doesn’t stink, and the Yankees are officially done in the media. But, we should not be upset over that. In fact, this is just the way I like it. Because if the bats get hot, and we take this thing, the “unbiased” media will have a coniption fit. Then, we’ll get to see these so called “analysts” back track and claim they picked the Yankees all along. Steve Phillips, and the rest of those IDIOTS that work at ESPN know less about baseball than any one of us, and because they have a team of researchers and Elias sports on speed dial, they are free to bandwagon their way into October. If you want laughs, it’s better than watching Comedy Central. Yankees, win the whole damn thing, so that we can see ESPN and the rest of the American sports media turn-coat and lay at your feet like a bunch of bandwagoning saps. GO YANKEES!!!!
———————————————————————–
I don’t ever back a Red Sox during an interview, but I think there are some Yankees (ahem, Jeter) who should take a page out of Dustin Pedroia’s book. They lost yesterday, and Pedroia’s take was, “We aren’t going to win very many games scoring 2 or 3 runs.” Then he went on to talk about how they haven’t helped out Wakefield much all year, and that he feels sorry for him.
———————————————————————–
That doesn’t sound like the canned response we get from Jeter when we are in a bad stretch, with his, “we’re playing well, we just got beat by a great pitcher tonight, and last night, and the night before that……”

Bryan,
Looking at Kennedy’s rehab starts and the fact that he went 7 in his last “start” (the old start a reliever for an inning and then your starter which indicates that Bruney will be back sooner than later) and has again proved that he is a TOP AAA pitcher, when do you think we can expect to see him back up with the big club??

When you’re as good as they Yankees there are people who just love to hate, it comes with the territory. Ask Arod what it’s like he gets killed when he doesn’t hit a HR every AB, granted he could be a little more clutch, but he doesn’t hurt you to have on the roster but people wanted him gone after last season. Sportswriters are boneheads many times but they have to go where the idiot people go and many see the Yankees not in first and thats underachieving and when they are in first it’s just another day at the ballpark. Sports-writing like any journalism job is all about how to sell papers, magazines, etc. and sometimes you have to succumb to the moronic masses. But when you take it too far you become ESPN and slide shows like Stump the Schwab to ESPN Classic at 2AM and show the ESPYs again and again. What’s important is the pitching staff is pitching very well, and playing the Twins it’ll be important with Morneau and Mauer and all those speed daemons. This is a big two series with the Twins and the SUCHS where we can leapfrog into the wildcard and if Tampa stumbles and we keep moving we can find ourselves right on the door and then see what the sportswriters say.

Yeah, so they aren’t Suffocation or Darkthrone…but still…thats besides the point. THEY RULE. Great songwriting…

Oh, and if they get Jason Bay or lord help us Matt Holiday its a “money driven deal” that is “bad for baseball”. Yeah, so this team is just supposed to sit by at the trading deadline and NOT make a deal to make this team better?

Where’s Jerome from Manhatten when you need him??? ;)

Hey, I just thought about something that annoys me.

Do any of you remember way back when in the late 90′s and going into the last few years about how because the “yankees were always winng and spending money and yada yada” that it was bad for baseball because there “were no pennant races anymor” and the wild card was bad and blah blah and the Yankees are bad for baseball because they spend all this money and teams like TAMPA can’t compete with the yanks winning the division every year.
Well, um, guess what? We have a pennant race! In 5 out of 6 divisions! and Tampa is leading the AL east!
And get this: Now that the Yankees aren’t “winning the division every year” they are unjustly slammed for every single flaw that almost every team has to contend with-depth in the pitching staff and the bench. How many contending teams have to deal with that? um, like all of them right now….
I mean, according to the media (mainly some sports writers for certain papers in NY…) the Yankees are bad for baseball if they win every year, and they are just no good if they are 4.5 games out in a pennant race that EVERYONE APPARANTLY wants. But if they were running away with the whole thing, its not an achievement, its “bad for baseball”. They are in a pennant race with the WS champions and a team that is playing good baseball and they are “underachieving”.
I don’t even know if I am explaining it right, but it annoys me what these people write. And don’t get me started on the sports talk radio shows and the hosts.
And all of a sudden tampa has money? Oh, thats called revenue sharing, care of the NY Yankees. Bad for baseball? I’m sure….

Granted this team has problems, but they are 3.5 back in the WC and 4.5 in the division. Its called a pennant race.
I hope the Yanks can get into the playoffs and win the whole thing just to stick it to those idiot sports writers/broadcasters.

marte/nady or bay and a starting pitcher for the forth slot. Randy wolf? any lefties available? What do you all think about washburn? maybe packaged w/ ichiro? (yeah he’s lefty, but he can light up this offense…)

We still do need a good solid infielder/pinch hitter for the bench.

we need three guys, folks, to secure this team-lefty reliever, starting pitcher, right handed outfielder w/ avg and power. less then 5 games back and very much in the hunt for this division. BUT I do NOT like the pitching match ups this week against the twins-ponson and rasner can very easily get blown out.

We apparently will not be using Posada as a catcher, so in otherwords, Giambi will be spending alot of days with 20 hrs and the salary on the bench.

Apparently we are still the market for outfielder and Damon will DH when he comes back. We also have a issue that could cause Posada or Giambi to sit and then they added Sexson.

Having been lucky to go to Yankee Stadium in May for 9 games I am keen to have someone tell me if they can when just prior to game time some rev up the crowd music starts. The first one played was you could say hip -hop or rap. Forgive me if I don’t know the difference but I am 58.

Can someone advise if they know the name of the song/band/artist. I am trying to arrange it as a ring tone for my two boys mobile phones.

Baseball tonight is one of the best programs they have. Did you see “stump the Schwab”? That was a great show. Outside of that, ESPN is a total waste. I Only watch it to see highlights of the Yanks, and when thats done i switch it off.
Can someone tell me the point of the “ESPY’s”? Why do we need an awards show for sports? Um, don’t the sports themselves have their own awards, like the “Cy Young” for Pitchers and MVP in the NFL? They just wind up giving awards to the teams that win their leagues’ championships! Waste of time. They could use that time and production money to create another one of their top-flight award winning made-for-TV movies like “Season on the Brink”. (Thats sarcasm, BTW. That was one of the worst movies ever made. And did we HAVE to see it four times per day for thre weeks? aweful)

ESPN’s been a joke for a while I mean Barry Melrose is garbage and hurts the great sport of hockey by speaking yet ESPN continued to employ him until he was hired to coach in the NHL. For baseball they are bandwagon professionals, they loved the Yanks when they were winning three straight and now they love the Sox. It’s all part of their East Coast bias front running loving programmers and it is why I now have to get my sports news online. And don’t get me started on Brett Farve and his coverage. Anyway Pettitte is pitching beautifully and hopefully he can keep it up!

Aussie Bryan as a 50 + here I was excited for The Shark. However, it looks like the Irishman Paddy is going to win this one. However, we all know in the USA that if the TIGER were there it would have been a different story. Yankees need to sweep today.

Looking at the pitching matchups before the series, I thought we could sweep. Then I saw Oakland’s record, they had a better record than us before this series started. Yet, they are trading away everyone, even Houston Street has scouts from teams ready to make offers for him. Sadly, our record was worse than theirs.

Can Aussie Bryan please divert everyones attention to a different game being golf.

Being a 58 year old reasonable golfer and loving the game and the enigma who isGreg Norman who at 53 years old and at best now a part time spare parts golfer being in contention after 13 holes in the last round to win the British Open.. He is an incredible example how at 53 anything is possible still. It is an incredible feat . He has fallen one behind and he needs a little luck. It is difficult to imagine being considered an absolute impossible chance to be in contention.

Spare a thought though for the ex professional Australian golfer though who has been a little bit of a playboy for a long time but now in a relationship for three years. He when challenged as to wheter he considered Norman could win was 1000 % emphatic that he could not and made the statement that he would marry his girl friend on AIR if Norman wins. Who is he barracking for now and who is his girl friend barracking for ??????. A fascinating story so far.

Isn’t it funny how media representation can actually NOT tell the story? The Rays have been basically about as perfect as they can be in the media. The Sox have always been the deep, already-been-there team with the incredible pitching that will be the team to take over the Rays (once again, in the media). And of course we get to the Yankees who have been just about as bad as bad can be this year. Injuries, underachieving stars, washed up vets. They’d be LUCKY to end up in third this year. Of course as we all know, media perception can be misleading. As of right now, the pitiful Yankees are only 4 games behind the perfect Sox and 5.5 behind the even more perfect Rays. Am I saying the Yankees will turn it around and take over? No, but I do think it’s funny how someone not watching the standings might actually think the Yankees are dead in the water if they only paid attention to a certain well-known sports network that has four letters in its name…
