Supporting the ‘Stache

This is a really cool graphic the talented designers at MLB.com cooked up for the Final Vote.

I’ll admit, I’m interested in seeing Giambi make the All-Star team, only because he’ll have something typically hilarious to say about how his mustache made all the difference. I love that he knew it looked terrible for the first few weeks and kept it anyway because he was hitting.

I also love that Derek Jeter told him to clean it up during one of the Yankees’ off-days — that was an official order from the Captain — and Giambi brushed in some Just For Men, showing up with a much darker and bushier growth.

Well, all that, and I think he’d be a draw to watch in the Home Run Derby. Giambi would be taking aim at the upper deck in right field and he’d probably send a few Jeffrey Maier-wannabes to the hospital in the process.

It’d be endlessly entertaining, but at last count, Giambi was still running third and needs to catch Evan Longoria of the Rays. Here’s the link to Support the ‘Stache.

I can remember when we used to KILL pitchers with patience.

2nd inning . .. Cano 3 pitch AB, Melky, 2 pitch AB, Molina 2 pitch AB (but a single . . .)
So much for working the count . . .

A make me nervous start from Ponson getting to bases loaded with a walk and a hit batter but luckily gets out of it. This could be a game with many an anxious moment.

I hate the idea of losing IPK. But I have to agree, we have to deal some of our pitching talent because that’s all we have to deal and we need young position players or prospects. Still, IPK’s stock has to be low right now. Dealing him now would feel like we sold short.

Good Morning NYC

It Is 0300 hours here in Melbourne and -2 degrees.

Chaz I agree wholeheartedly. There needs to be a trade set up with as with your suggestion kennedy. The young pitchers that are in the system are just starting to come through and if Wang and Hughes come back where will that leave Kennedy. There will be Mussina Wang Pettite Joba and Hughes along with younfg pitchers coming through such as Baby Face Robertson Cox melancon etc. It is good to stockpile them but the team NEEDSsomething NOW to move forward in 2008.

Maybe. IPK still has a big upside. He’s super young with a lot to learn, but he’ll make a good starter. Contrary to what others think. I would still like to see us use him as a trade chip to get a missing peice of our puzzle. We don’t need to hold onto ALL our prospects, just enough to keep the pipeline full.

Based on the “any given sunday” concept, I’m not getting excited about last night’s win. We’ve strung them together before. Let’s see them follow it up. We need more than to go .525 over hte next 60 games.

Is IPK on a pitch count at SWB? He only went 4 last night with a good line. Pen blew it for him.

This on the All-Star Final Vote:

With 48 hours remaining in the voting
period and ballots coming in at this fevered pace, each race is too close to call and neither margin
should be considered safe.
In the American League, the three leaders, Longoria, Jermaine Dye of the Chicago White Sox and
Jason Giambi of the New York Yankees, all have more than two million votes each and are
separated by just over 10 percent. They are followed by Brian Roberts of the Baltimore Orioles and
Jose Guillen of the Kansas City Royals.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

YANKEES CONTINUE TO SUPPORT THE ‘STACHE;
WILL GIVE AWAY REPLICA MUSTACHES AT WEDNESDAY’S GAME VS. TAMPA BAY

The New York Yankees announced today that they will give away Jason Giambi replica mustaches to the first 20,000 fans in attendance at their Wednesday, July 9, game vs. the Tampa Bay Rays, scheduled to begin at 1:05 p.m.

The mustaches are in conjunction with the club’s initiative to “Support the ‘Stache” and vote Jason Giambi on the 2008 All-Star Final Ballot.

Fans can cast their votes for Giambi at http://www.yankees.com, or by texting ‘A2’ to 36197 (or 88555 for those Yankees fans in Canada). Voting ends at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 10. Yankees fans are urged to vote early and often. By voting online, fans will be entered to win one of five authentic Jason Giambi autographed prizes.

It is believed to be the first mustache giveaway in Yankee Stadium history.

Giambi is batting .256 (63-for-246) with 13 doubles, 18 home runs, 53RBI and 44BB in 78 games this season, leading the team in walks, tying for tops in homers and ranking second in RBI. He is currently tied for fifth in the American League in home runs and ranks eighth in on-base percentage (.393) and slugging percentage (.537). In addition, Giambi leads the AL, averaging one home run every 13.7 at-bats and ranks second with 1RBI per 4.6 at-bats.
