Fixing a Wang turn

You had to anticipate that the Yankees were going to look from within to name Saturday’s starter, as the organizational motto under Brian Cashman is always now to look from within to make sure they don’t have the answer already.

For one start, Dan Giese looks like he’ll be it, and that’s great for him — but there’s a reason that Giese has essentially been a career Minor Leaguer. They’ll look to find something on a longer term basis to fill in for Chien-Ming Wang, and that will include looking outside the organization. It’s clear that the Kei Igawa show doesn’t require an encore performance, and neither Jeff Karstens or Ian Kennedy are ready to step into Yankee Stadium right now.

Jorge Posada hosted a charity dinner last night in New York. It always impresses me how many Yankees players give up their free off day to attend these sorts of functions, when time away from a stadium has become so valuable over a 162-game schedule.

As for Hank Steinbrenner calling the idea of pitchers hitting an archaic rule from the 19th century — the DH came about in the same year that the Steinbrenner era of Yankees ownership began, 1973. You can’t blame the rule for Wang’s injury; it’s a freak thing. Are you telling me a conditioned professional athlete like Chien-Ming Wang can’t reasonably be expected to run 180 feet and make a left turn halfway through?

Meanwhile, how about that other New York team? You can’t be surprised that they fired Willie Randolph, but to can him in the middle of the night after making him fly out to the West Coast for a day and to actually win a game– somehow, the Mets just turned Randolph into a sympathetic figure. Hey, there’s a reason they’re called the Amazin’s.

Maybe we see Willie in pinstripes again????

How did I know that I would be hearing “shoulda got Santana” BS today? I know, because Yankee fans panic more than the organization, and that is saying something. Explain to me how dealing Hughes (who WILL be great), Kennedy (who MIGHT be good), Cabrera (our starting center fielder, a defensive catalyst, and a sparkplug), plus another top level prospect, AND a 200 million dollar deal for 1 pitcher with marginal numbers (at best) in the East division is a move we should have made? Were you guys born yesterday, Or do you have only 1 year to live and want to see the Yankees give up decades of stability in 3 positions to lock up 1? GET OFF of the Santana deal.
Sadly, our ACE is down. We need some guys in the rotation to pick up the slack. We need PEDitte to start earning that 16 million. We need someone the likes of Geise to become a passable number 5 starter. We need Joba, Moose, and Rasner to step their game up. What we don’t need is people calling Melky Cabrera “expendable”. You want Damon’s rag arm back in center? You want an already slim offense to rely on ANOTHER rookie from AAA to come in and immediately produce? You want Cano to go .300/30/100 for some other club while Gonzo’s anemic bat plugs up the 9 hole? We’re going to be fine.
We need to get an ace pitcher. What we don’t need is to broom out a struggling Cano just because he’s struggling, broom Cabrera for no reason, and broom a guy like Hughes for that ACE.

Thank you Chaz. That was about as well put as it could have been with Santana. I would LOVE to have the guy here, but not for that price. The Mets right now are in a tough spot because they sold the farm for Santana and now they have nothing to trade with. The Yankees DO have chips right now. Look, if you had told me that Kennedy, Hughes, AND Wang were going to be injured by this time then I would have said “Sure! Let’s get Johan!” But then again, I had known that then the Twins probably would have anyway, therefore they’d end up trading him to the Mets anyway.

I favored the Santana trade but that is water under the bridge. Hopefully Giese will step into that 5th slot. If not than the Yankees need to look via the trade route without giving away Cano and/or Melky for a rag arm. Let’s give Giese more than one start and see where this goes.

I think Sabathia is the Yankees best option.
Check out my blog I just started: shenn.mlblogs.com

He made be the best option shenn but again I’m not willing to sell the farm, Melky or Cano for him. The Yankees have been down that road way to many times and gotten burned.

Having Giese take Wang’s spot in the rotation would be an absolutely horrible decision by this organization. He has never started a game in his short, brief career of 9+ innings, and was horrible last season with the Giants, he’s barely a reliever. There is a better option than a career minor leaguer who can’t even hit 90 mph on the radar gun in Jeff Marquez. this team doesn’t have many options, but that doesn’t mean this team has to go with the lesser of the two. Again, don’t expect Sabathia any time soon, the Indians would be nuts to trade him at this point!!

The Randolph firing is 100% complete utter racism. He took 2 of 3 in Texas, almost 3, he flew 3000 miles to anaheim and won, they fired him 3am ET with a press release. Randolph should have been fired last year but not this season.

Willie is welcome to run 3rd base here.

I wonder if a fired manager still gets to be in the all-star game?

Here are the options:

Garcia (ready about the same time as Hughes)
Arroyo
Blanton
Bedard
David Wells (ready 3 weeks)
Minor league option
Sabithia
Penny (injured also)

If we wouldn’t deal for these guys in this last offseason, why would we deal for them now?

“Garcia (ready about the same time as Hughes)
Arroyo
Blanton
Bedard
David Wells (ready 3 weeks)
Minor league option
Sabithia
Penny (injured also)”

Bedard, maybe… the rest can stay where they are or unemployed as far as I’m concerned.

Net ate my post, I’m not going to retype it, guess I should copy before clicking post on these boards, it’s ridiculous that it can’t keep text in RAM.

Bedard might be the bestoption of all of those. He won’t be nearly as costly as Sabathia, and the Yanks may have a good chance of getting him earlier than Sabathia or any other pitcher considering the Mariners are a pathetic team at 26-46, and are most likely out of the playoff race.

Chaz!!! Chill! I WASN’T making the case for ANY trades involving anyone! What I was (perhaps ineptly) trying to do was illustrate what I expect to see in the MLB circles. Lots of rumor and conjecture as there was over Santana about whose on the block, whose name is being floated, who is expendable, and on and on. And I did that using the usual suspects: Damon in CF making Melky expendable. Some farm arms perhaps out there for CF?
I don’t think we need to undo everything this team has TRIED to do over the last year and a half with its farm. But I DO expect to see something happen.

Matt,
I’m not saying Giese should replace Wang’s spot. If we make no moves, Giese simply moves to the 5 hole and PEDitt becomes our ace. I’m looking at the choices, and I say we can get Bedard cheaper than any other choice. The problem with Bedard is that he’ll spend more time on the DL than in the rotation. IF we have to make a move, we need to chase CC. We shouldn’t get crazy in who we deal, though.

Fair enough, Golf.

It just pisses me off because CC is going to be a free agent at the end of the year, and we won’t be able to wait till then to get him.

We’ll be forced to deal top-level prospects to acquire him (or anyone else), THEN turn around and pay him 50% more than what any other team would pay him so that he can pitch for this team longer than 1/2 of a season. Sometimes it sucks being a Yankee fan.

Hank really makes me laugh, uh Hank, Wanger was lightly jogging when he busted his foot, I run harder to my car in the rain, it was a freak accident, with no one to blame. Hank reminds me of a drunk uncle that most people have in their families, you know the uncle that gets a little rowdy after too much Southern Comfort. Like Chris Rock says “Everybody’s family has got that drunk uncle…” Anyways I actually like Bronson Arroyo, getting him will kill time till Philly Hughes comes back, damn I miss Philly. The Yanks aren’t getting CC through a trade, so stop with the CC talk, not happening!

For the record, Johan Santana is my favorite pitcher NOT wearing pinstripes. CC Sabathia runs a close second.

Bronson Arroyo? What would we have to cough up for him?

Hank Steinbrenner is a WIND BAG. I’m sure he wears steel shoes to keep from floating off into the stratosphere. ALL TALK and NO ACTION. Glad to see that the team was left in good hands.

I have no idea who the Yanks would have to give up to get Bronson, I was hoping someone would tell me. I’ll give the Reds Carl Pavano and some sunflower seeds, I don’t know. It shouldn’t cost that much, Bronson has been average this season. By the way, it’s funny to me when fans say “We” like they are part of the team and the front office, real cute.

We are part of the team. Albeit unofficially, I AM A YANKEE.

Oh damn I forgot Sidney Ponson got released by the Rangers for acting like an a-hole, he was decent in the starts I saw him pitch, sure he weighs 400 pounds but he won’t cost you anything, why not give him a shot? Is that a bad idea? I’m sure Matt will knock my little idea down, be gentle Matt.

chaz,

The main reason I say Bedard isn’t because he will be cheaper option, but also the most “gettable”. The Yanks would be able to get him at a much earlier date than Sabathia, who the Indians will most likely hang on to until they are out of any race, divisional or otherwise, while with Bedard who is on a dreadful team in Seattle, and would be more open for a trade. The longer this team is without a quality pitcher to replace Wang, the less likely it wll be for the team get to the postseason. In the short run though, this team will have to fill his spot internally with Marquez being the best option.

Even better; I can’t be traded, lost to free agency, demoted to the minors, benched, injured, or anything else.

Yeah, Bedard is a good move for the right price. I just don’t want to see him sitting next to the Wanger. I think Bedard would make a good Yankee though. He’s sort of the poor man’s Johan anyway.

That’s ok jeterstar, I already knocked that idea when Robert brought it up earlier. Besides, who wants a mediocre pitcher who gets cut for being an ***? If he were any good the Rangers would have overlooked it rather than just cut him really says something about him.

Jeterstar,
Ponson? Ummmm… How about “been there done that failed miserably” How long was he a Yankee? 3 or 4 hours? Long enough to pitch like crap and then leave.

Last time he was with the Yanks, he managed to put together an ERA around 10.00.

Frankly, if someone gets shoved off for having a bad attitude, why would we want him poisoning our clubhouse? Why adversely affect what little team chemistry we already have?

Matt brings up a good point. Not only is he fat, but he sucks. Jeterstar, you’re latin; don’t spanish speaking people call fatsos “Panson” (accent on the a and e). LOL.

This series against San Diego is going to rest on whether we can get to their starters or not. We can win a slugfest against the Padres, but we’ll get owned in pitcher’s duels.

That’s right Chaz, “We” make up the ‘rest’ of the Yankee Organization. Granted, I don’t expect them to poll the public or fanbase at large for suggestions on what to do… that’d make them look sillier than they already do by themselves… but we can certainly offer up or ideas and it costs them nothing! :P

I use “we” all the time when referring to the Org… The fans should have a voice, albeit a limited one.

We pay their exorbitant salaries, that’s the bottom line, so it’s like we’re the stockholder(s). You will eventually have to answer to ‘us’ either individually or collectively. Not that the Yankees need to worry too much about selling tickets, I’m sure corporation after corporation would be willing to buy up a lot of them if push came to shove, but the fact is, if you can’t get people to pay for it (your product), then your business is sunk. So, yeah… “We”. ;) and listen up Yankee Organization! :D

I could really care less if we do nothing. I’d be ok with it and I’ve said it before. But I do not want to see another boneheaded Crashman move that ships off decent talent (Proctor) for garbage in return (Betamit). I don’t know how much Cash knows about baseball, players and numbers and trends and etc… but from what I’ve seen, he looks at paper and nothing else, which is why on paper we always look so good but yet on the field, we’ve been crapping goose eggs for 7 years.

So no matter what we do, it better be a smart move or a smart non-move because just one more idiotic trade and I might just have to turn in my Yankee-4-Life card. :P

I swear Sidney was ok this season, I keep up with the Rangers they play in my backyard, sad to say I watch every game, hey I’m in love with Josh Hamilton, I gotta get my Josh fix everyday, speaking of Josh, you guys have better voted for him for the All Star game. Anyways, I’m not sure what Sidney did but he pissed off Nolan Ryan the Rangers President, Nolan doesn’t play around, ask Robin Ventura. I’m fresh out of ideas, whatever. Maybe Giese will rock out as a starter. Hey Willie Randolph come back to the Bronx yo! Girardi could use your help.

We can make the CC deal lets do it. Wang will add to the rotation when he comes back.

Bryan, can you confirm that was Clemens’ orange Hummer than Olney said was seen at the himes complex?

Ponson = hillenbrand as a pitcher, terrible for the clubhouse.

Hank is gonna hire Randolph, so he can be part of the all-star game. He may not hire him as a coach.

Just set the bar lower everyday huh? Bd, knuteroc44@hotmail.com

Daily News is absolutely blasting the Mets for how they did Randolph.

Wow, did anyone catch that Omar Minaya press conference? We all whine about Cashman, but I’m starting to realize there ARE more clueless GMs out there!

As they should it was a cowardly thing to do, and they said they did it so they didn’t have to fire him on Father’s Day, so instead they drag him 3,000 miles away to do it when the Mets rattle off 3 out of 4 well played Amazings you rock…

So what was dumber? Hank Steinbrenner’s comments, or the way the Mets let Willie go?

Slamming our organization is like slamming America itself. We may hate the way it’s being run (no matter if you are a conservative nut job, or a liberal with no nuts and no job [sorry, couldn't help myself]). No matter what is said about the Yankees, it’s still the finest sports organization in all the land. Same goes for America, still the greatest country ever.

Elfman, see my above post for my opinion on that. Hank’s a windbag, but he’s OUR windbag. Minaya is scum. In fact, when was the last time that the Mets had a GM that wasn’t a frucking tool?

I think Randolph will wind up in NY or LA, He was a Torre protege, He was well liked. He’d work out well with Cano & Gonz.
He can be a big help. Bedard would be our best bet if the price is right. He knows the AL East. I don’t think he is happy in Seattle.. Forget Ponson. We can’t look back at the Santana deal. He is/was overpriced, As will be CC if we go after him now. Everyone knows we’re hurting and will want more than the value (our farm!) for a good Pitcher.
“GO YANKEES!”

Minaya did it to save his job, Manual will be worse than Randolph. Pedro and co don’t want to play for Manual, they loved Willie.

The way they did Randolph is probably the worst way to fire a guy in the history of baseball. Vince McMahon has fired people with more class.

Giambi is an all-star. Girardi will make him 1. Homerun.

Olney said we should trade for Wolf, we hit him 2 twice for hoemruns and the game just started.

How can they keep the Giambino out the all-star game? 2 HRs in 2 ABs. Its a voting fraud. Coaches will add him.

I checked on the Abreu thing, Cleveland does want Abreu but they don’t want Kennadia, they want a couple of minor league arms.

The pounding of Wolf continues, especially by Giambi. He hasn’t been much since ’03 when he was with Philadelphia when he won 16 games. He isn’t impressing anyone tonight.

Cashman may look at it as the price just went down.

If Crashman thought that, then he has afew screws loose. Abreu is a player in his mid-30s with maybe 2 or 3 good, productive years left at most while Kennedy is basically nothing more than a minor league pitcher who has struggled in the majors. Those two arms along with Abreu would represent an increase in price as they may be looking at two of the Yanks more prized power arms like Melancon, McCutcheon etc. In short, the Indians didn’t think Abreu and Kennedy were near enough for Sabathia.

chaz,

You do me proud my boy!!!!! I thought I was the only one who thought liberals didn’t have nuts ( I write this with tears of joy in my eyes)!!!! For all you liberals I’m just kidding (Maybe)!!!! HA! HA!

They may get stuck with draft picks.

Matt Susuki is one of those angry ho-mos you see on tv pissed because his marriage license is not valid.

bpuke got caught sucking his daddy Betapuke’s betapuke, Clemens now jealous!!!!! bpuke now thinking of going after Randolph. Run Willie!!!!! Run!!!!! Run for the hills!!!!!!

bpuke now thinking of moving to his favorite mancrush’s homestate of Texas, and starting up a Gay/Pedaphile polygamist sect.

LOVE games like this. Kick back, relax drink a cold one & watch them win one.

Jeterstar, I say “we” all the time, I’m used to it since I’m part of a baseball team anyway. Hopefully someday I’ll be a Yank as well.

On the injury front, here are our options:

1. Shift Geise to number five spot ( the easiest move for lazy Casha_s_s. )
2. Look inward for some farm help. ( Marquez, Melancon, etc.)
3. Acquire an impact arm ( which would be a shame that the fact that Wang was injured is why Cashman actually got up off his blackberry and acquired someone. Priceless. )

Pitchers of interest on the market:

Bedard
Blanton
Harden
Lowe
Sabathia
Wolfe
Padilla
Millwood
Byrd

The last three should be last options if you ask me.

Bedard, Blanton and Harden are realistically the most ideal.

By realistically I mean the possibility of a deal being made is high. Bedard is on a horrible team and has no business being there ( Mariners ). Blanton and Harden have both been on the trading block for a large amount of time now, a deal with Beane isn’t out of the wuestion, though his greed for top-level prospects is always kryptonite.

We’d be hard pressed not to deal for a real starter ( something Giese is not ) and we cannot expect one of our top level prospects to become Wang. We can’t don’t have that time to waste nor do we have that convenience to lose games in the event they struggle. It’s not like we’re the Red Sox.

Anyway, sit on that for a few minutes and then you’ll know why I have never liked Cashman. Giese for number five? Dude, I like him in the bullpen, don’t push your luck you idiot. ” What if the answer is right under our noses?” Are you serious? Does anyone in here look at Giese’s stuff on the mound and say he could be the answer to our rotation woes? I’d love to give Melancon or Marquez or anyone of our other great pitching prosects a chance. But with prospects comes potential for greatness and disaster. We don’t have time to waste on seeing how they turn out at this level if we are to make the playoffs. Now if this were a rebuilding season ( rebuilding season? ) I wouldn’t be typing right now. ‘ Wouldn’t care.

We need a proven starter who doesn’t carry a bunch of ? marks on his back who can come in and provide Ws when he’s on the mound. Period.

Bedard , Blanton and Harden are pitchers with great stuff and in need of a change of scenery. With this offense, thaty’d just provide them with better mental stability which would fortify their game out htere.

Seriously, it’s a pitchers paradise when the offense is on.

Can’t we all just get along?

BDSouth totally agree with your post. Ideally Giese is suited for 2-3 innings and another arm would be a huge help.

Man Pettitte looks like an ace tonight. I know it is the Padres but the guy is putting forth a great effort.

Should send your resume’ to the Steins I’m sure your well qualified for GM.

Byrd was the 5th guy Olney mentioned. We want Sabathia. Him Wang and Pettitte in the playoffs, we will win. Pettitte looked smooth tonight.

Pettitte is a 2nd half pitcher.
Matt Susuki sucked black shelley
Willie Randolph will forever be a Yankee.

“We” I’m interested in how many inning did you pitch again?

As much as we fans complain about our pitching staff they are working on at least 15 straight scoreless innings. I don’t care who thye are pitching against that is an improvement.

The last few games have really made the teams overall stats decent.

Again Giese is nothing but an average pitcher who has never started a game in his career. Crashman would once again be showing his stupidity as a GM by moving him into the rotation. Marquez might be the best alternative as a starter, and Melancon would be an alternative only for relief help out of the pen.

Of Bedard, Blanton, and Harden, Bedard is the best option if this team goes down the trade route, as may be the cheapest, and easiest to get since he plays for Seattle. Like the Indians, the A’s would be nuts to trade Blanton as they too are in the thick of the divisional race, so don’t expect to see him any time soon. Beane isn’t stupid. Harden should be obtained only as a setup man since he is one of the more injury prone starters in the majors so he also represents great disaster. Beane doesn’t have a greed for minor league talent, that’s where his shrewdness comes in, he is always able to deal for that type of talent because they can develop young at the major league level to the point where they can get top minor league talent for them. That’s why you see the A’s always being a competitive team despite losing its top talent every season. IF Crashman does deal with Beane, Crashman is going to have to be careful as Beane might outsmart him.

bpuke has gotten high off of Clemens’s betapuke!!!!

Make that 16 innings, great pitching Andy.

Padres have just sent in a Cuban revolutionary to pitch, it’s Che Guevara.

bpuke’s daddy Betapuke just struck, guess too much sucking, going on, get out of the way next time bpuke!!!!!

Pett’s been great this month, aside from that 10 hit, 10 run disaster in Minnesota and one other bad start, he has been our best pitcher so far ( Wang being an exception ). Yo momma!

Cashman, go get Bedard…
– What…? The Blackberry… it’s soothing. I mean, don’t we have Geise? He did throw a no hitter the other day, he’s practically an All Star.
– What? All Star? He sucks! You expect o throw a guy who can’t reach ninety into the rotation? Are you stupid?
– * Takes a puff of weed * Listen to me. Look at me. Do I look like some idiot who doesn’t know what he’s doing. Trust me, Geise is going to be the next Santana… righht handed or something.
– The guy you passed on for two injured pitchers? It’s more likely you get a job next season.
– The hell with you!
– Go get Bedard you idiot. Pot smoker!

LMAO at your post BDSouth

Man Rivera makes this game look easy. Game, set, match another day Yankee fans can say The Yankees Win, The Yankees Win.

so what is the timetable on phil hughes return?he went down months ago how long does a rib take to heal to get back up in the minors?hes there best option so shouldnt they be pursuing to get him back to the majors?and is ian kennedy pitching yet in the minors?at least he has mlb innings in if hughes isnt ready soon kennedy is a better choice than igawa and any AA pitcher who has no mlb innings.

From what I have heard, Hughes’s injury isn’t healing quite as fast as they had hoped. The Yanks hope to have him back in August after a couple of rehab starts possibly. Kennedy isn’t ready to come back yet, hopefully in July.
