Yankees beat the heat, Royals

The busiest guys at Yankee Stadium on Sunday weren’t on the field, and that includes Joba Chamberlain, who was better in his second big league start but still not everything they’re looking for him to be. Nope, you’d have to think the people doing the briskest business were hawking cool water, beverages and liquid-shooting fans.

This was a hot day in the tri-state area — first pitch, 95 degrees — and if you sweltered through it at the Stadium, you have my respect (and I hope you found a nice, cool air-conditioned spot to settle back down after the Yankees’ win). Chances are that Dan Giese will find a way to celebrate his first Major League victory a little bit on Sunday night.

Me? I’m off this weekend and spent a good portion of my Sunday morning running a 10K across the George Washington Bridge on the hottest day of the year so far. No one said timing was my thing.

The Yankees will be back at it on Monday, wrapping up this homestand before heading west to Oakland and Houston – now that’s a strange road trip. Interleague play, here we come.
Mike Mussina and Luke Hochevar are the starters on a Monday afternoon in the Bronx.

Or how about any comment whatsoever relating Bonds and the Yankees together?

That should warrant an instant no-cred status!

Don’t let ‘em bother you guys, Chaz and Robert… I don’t expect you two to know everything and there’s no point in bashing someone for being passionate.

The offense failed us yesterday, period. Mussina pitched well enough to win, not bad enough to lose, when a pitcher gives up less than his own ERA, that should be all that needs to be said (that being read as having an ERA that is 4 or less). If your offense is getting fewer than 4 a game, that’s all that really needs to be said too.

Like

Just ignore them Robert. They accuse you of not knowing anyhing about baseball, and in the same breath say Moose was at fault for that loss? 8 innings of two run ball is putting your team in a bad position? Why don’t we elect KS to be our GM? He’ll raise our average age to 55 and we will get discounts on our steroid orders because we will get them in bulk.

Long odds don’t bother me at all. When I became a fan there were 15 teams against the Yankees. That increased to 29 until the success in Boston changed it to 28 to 2. If I have no support here, and there is a little, I have plenty on other blogs where the participants are less juvenile.

By RobertGKramer@AOL.Com on June 9, 2008 7:09 PM

Are you an idiot Robert? Gardner is in now way ready to play in the majors at this time. He strikes out way too much, and wouldn’t be anything more than a PH, so there is no way the Yanks would give an inexperienced rookie one of the most difficult jobs in baseball. Since you’re so ignorant about the sport I’ll tell you, pinch hitting is one of the most difficult jobs in baseball. Lane doesn’t even hit much, his low BA is proof of that he’s just another Duncan. Learn something about baseball Robert, your stupidity is killing us!!

You guys are crazy!!! Cano is a great 2B, he’ just struggling through a rough time right now. What he doesn’t need is a demotion back to the minors. How is that going to help? Betemit a lousy backup 1B? LOL!!!!! Once again you show yourself to be lacking in baseball knowledge, and how big of a jerk you are chaz. Betemit has thunder in his bat!!! He homered in two straight games, and could be the next starting 1B for this team. Way to show your ignorance chaz!!!! You embarrass yourself. We need Manny Ramirez or Bill Hall, he has pop in his bat, but for some reason is only being used as bench player. Like I said earlier, this team needs to sign Bonds pronto as a DHI wouldn’t mind seeing Clemens or Wells back in this rotation either, to help straighten out the rotation which has been ruined by these young pitchers who aren’t ready to pitch in the majors. Kennedy was rushed, he should never have been bought up in the first place. Yanks should trade him for CC Sabathia. Get rid of Duncan too, he tries to pull everything he’s worse than Betemit. This loss was Mussina’s fault as well as he put this team in a terrible situation. He’s nothing more than a 5-inning pitcher. He’s old, and crappy!! I wouldn’t mind seeing him traded away to Philadelphia or the Dodgers for help for the pen.Mariano “give up the gopher ball in tight situations” River-apuke gave up another situation. He’s getting old, and his talent has become crappy. This team needs another closer, maybe K-Rod. Chaz, shut your trap about that steroid paranoia, this is America, not China or Russia, you’re innocent until proven guilty, DOLT!!!!

I would have to agree. There is no reason for 3 catchers if Posada is back. We already have a lousy backup 1st baseman in Wilson Betamit, so we don’t need 2 lousy backups. See ya, Duncan. Maybe we bring up a couple of new faces and see what happens? Who do you think?

No debate, just speculation on what could or should have been. Something to think about on the long flight for the Killer Cs (they are killing us.) Look for some runners up from SWB for the NL games. I suspect Duncan going down and Moeller DFAd by Friday!

I can’t believe that Cano has gone from one of my favorite young players on this club, who as recently as this spring I was touting as the next Honus Wagner, to the bane of my existance. How quickly inept play, and a non-caring attitude make me want to see this dolt playing in some obscure and irrelevant, small market, National League ballpark, with a nice “W” or “P” on his hat. Maybe even a stupid fish.

Like

Maybe Girardi just lets the players wing it? Decide for themselves? Are Cano and Cabrera not capable of learning situational hitting?

Like

Like I said earlier, there is a fine line between being a good hitter and being a patient, good hitter. Cano and Cabrera are good hitters, but are by FAR the worst on the team for pitch recognition. If Jeter had been up with the bases jacked and 2 outs in the ninth, he would’ve taken till he got a strike, then he would’ve been VERY selective with what pitch he tried to put in play. You HAVE to force a pitcher to go after you in that situation. Cabrera did exactly opposite and went after the pitcher. Cano, on the other hand, took the 0-0 pitch for strike 1 (which he should have done), then took ANOTHER one right in the same spot. Instead of crushing that mistake pitch, he hacks at the 3rd pitch 6 feet above his head? Is he mentally disabled? As for Cabrera, It really doesn’t matter if that pitch 1-0 was right down the middle, YOU HAVE TO TAKE THAT PITCH! This is Hitting 101. Why are we debating this? We should have never seen it. Does Girardi not have a take sign? My high school baseball coach’s take sign was a pat on the top of his head.

So if Melky gets tossed, Damon goes to center and Matsui to left losing the DH. That means Mo or a PH bats in the 9 hole. Do we let Mo bat, send up Duncan, or give Joba his first MLB at bat? Joba and Mo have to be taking BP for the coming inter-league! Or does Duncan go to left and bat in place of Melky anyhow?

Like

And if Cano swings at the first or second pitch like he was it likely wins the game! Or whoever subs if Melky got tossed may have won it also!

Hochever was the overall first pick in 2006 or 2007!

Like

Yeppers, I’ve been saying it for awhile… too many first pitch swings. I saw Bryan finally mention it in his blog about the players really liking Long. Hmmmm

I understand where he’s coming from but we’re not talking about mechanics of his (Cano’s) swing; but we ARE talking about free-swinging versus take a pitch to see what you’re throwing me scenarios. Long seems to be believe that you just let that go or something; meaning he didn’t really address it as; yes, we’d like to stop seeing 0-0 swings… He said verbatim that some hitters are more aggressive than others.

Well lemme just say that aggression can work against you too just like pacifism can in certain situations. What a bunch of bunk as far as I’m concerned.

Aggressive hitting is not shortening your swing with two-strikes in the count; aggressive hitting is swinging at the 0-2 pitch because you pertinere know the guy has to get the next one over… or something like that. FREE-SWINGING on the other hand is what you have in Cano. It’s the same type of swinging I see on about 90% of National League teams; it’s NOT the same thing you see in AL pitching by and large. It is what you expect to see in younger players so I’ll give him that but how “Long” should we expect that error in his game to last? He did go to 0-2 in the ninth so I’m not going to badger him much more today, but you’re right, we’re not even consistent with our plate approaches… even the Captain who does like to swing at first pitches doesn’t do so very often; he must know something that Robbie has yet to get a grip on.

I do hold Long accountable though; or Girardi for not putting and end to it, it’s his player at the plate swinging 0-0.

Like

Gonzo, or anyone else in the minors, could not make some of those plays Cano made! And he is at least a power threat at the Stadium. Melky should have at least taken one strike although that second pitch was a strike in a good spot for him!

Like

Someone (Girardi) should sit Cano down and tell him he either grows up or is traded. He sucks and yet he acts like a spoiled superstar. When the Yanks are down 12-2, or whatever, and he’s thrown out at 2nd trying to stretch a single and then stands there laughing it up with the opposing shortstop, I feel like vomiting. His total disregard and condescension for the fan who is paying his salary is nauseating (hence the vomiting comment). It’s not as if this is a one time thing. He has always been about “Cano” and screw the rest of you. Strike out on 3 pitches in today’s game on a ball up around his eyes – no big deal. Send him to KC or Pittsburgh and be done with him. I’d rather watch the Yankees lose with players who hate to lose than this self-serving, egotistical, spoiled, 7-year-old *****.

Like

It’s official!!! There’s no such thing as an easy series for this team, period. It would be absolutely foolish to say that the immediate schedule is in the Yanks favor. There’s no such thing as a team being an easy win for these guys. It’s bad enough for these guys not to come out of this series without a series win, it’s even worse to be down against a team like KC in the season series. Yanks are lucky (or unlucky) to have one more series against these guys later in the season. I’m hopeful these guys can take the series against the A’s, but also doubtful. I would also hardly call Houston, SD, and Cincinnati gimmes either.

Like

It looks like he’s on his way to becoming a nice trade chip. Why do we want to spend 6 million per year on a streaky hitter? He’s either batting .500 or .100.; NEVER any consistency. I thought he would develop some patience, but he obviously hasn’t.

Like

Sending him down to the minors wouldn’t send him a message. He’d still get payed the same money to suck down there. He got his contract, and now plays like he could give a crap.

So what is the deal with Cano anyway? Just when you think he’s finally breaking out, he reverts back. I’d like to start seeing some good at bats at SOME point this season. I mean when Giambi’s slumping he can at least work a walk or SOMETHING.

Like

Of course Girardi isn’t to blame, it’s the freakin offense, I wouldn’t blame Rivera either, it happens! Too bad the Yanks don’t have any second basemens in the minors to replace Cano. He needs to be sent a message, and sending him to the minors might do that. Or the Yanks could go all Godfather and leave a dead fish wrapped up in a bulletproof vest in his locker. The Yanks are such a tease. WHATEVER, I’m going out for margaritas.

14 games UNDER .500, and they take 2 in OUR yard? If there was ever a time when Girardi should call them out in public, it’s now. Look at what that blabber mouth Guillen did….

I think the big fear should be that the Yankees are going to play a GOOD team next. They did play well in the series against KC, but the Royals are of course a terrible team. We’ll see what happens when they REALLY get tested.

Like

Really the biggest problem with this game was one stupid pitch by Mo. Rivera is obviously just as good as he was at the beginning of the season, but to go there with that pitch on an 0-2 count? That’s just dumb. Guillen has HAMMERED that pitch for 4 straight games. I’m not sure what they were trying to do with that pitch, but it didn’t work. That was the difference. Sure, the Yankees had their chances, but that “un-Mo-like” moment was the difference. He’ll bounce back and the way Arod and Giambi have been swinging lately, I think the team will bounce back too.

Like

Little streak or not, Cano should be sent down to work w/ the hitting coach @ Scranton. Gonzalez should be called up. He couldn’t do worse. Is this Alberto Gonzalez kid the same kid who got deported several years ago after he floated on a raft from Cuba to Miami?

I would not blame Girardi for this one but I wish he’d chew this team out publically. Some guys are still just collecting a paycheck.

This team can not afford to lose games like this and expect to make a Wild Card spot. It’s back to work. Peace out.

Like

This is why this team is a .500 club. Split with the likes of KC at home. Great AB’s by Abreu and Cano with runners in scoring position. Don’t know about the rest of you bloggers but my patience is running thin with Cano. He needs an *ss chewing by his manager. Mo is in one of his long ball times. This team should NEVER split with the Royals at home.

I would rather he struck out. Instead he gets to 1-0 and then tries to pull a 1-0 fastball on the OUTSIDE of the plate. He should’ve had that bat on his shoulder until he had 2 strikes!

What a weekend for Yankee fans!

Yes, you’ve got to be concerned with Pettitte. Yes, we do need to show consistency in both Pitching and Hitting. Yes, we can win both Series against the northern California teams. Yes, we can win a game in the bottom of the ninth, yes we can come from behind after being down 3 or more. Yes, Giambi does have something left. Yes, Giambi SHOULD be in the Home-Run Derby, if not him then who?! Yes, we should make no-name pitchers look like just that, but we still manage to make them look like Cy-Young candidates. We’ve seen this Luke fella once, last year in relief. Let’s hope we got enough of a look to embarass him today.

And, YES, if you’d have tried to tell me Moose would be tied or leading the AL in Wins at this or any juncture past game 1, I’d have laughed too. You’ve got to tip your cap to him, he’s really shown me a lot this year, and praytell I think he may just have proven himself a “Yankee” over the course of what he’s done this season. Now of course the second-half still looms and is where Moose almost inevitably starts to falter, but let’s hope it’s just a trip-up or something and not an all-out falling down.

Giambi won the Home Run contest his first year as a Yankee and Abreu won once as a Phillie! Would be great to have them both and Duncan in it this year for the Final Season! Ortiz may be doubtful.

And let’s get out the vote for Cano and Posada. Cano should have a decent BA by 7/15 and I want his glove. Pedroia and Varitek leading now? BOOOOOO!

And bpark,
I will admit that I was wrong about Giambi. He’s definitely got something left and I thought he was toast. He’ll cool off eventually, but I honestly didn’t think he would have 14 home runs the whole SEASON a few weeks ago. Sometimes it feels great to be proven wrong.

Like

Damon really has been a good signing overall for the Yankees. Last year was nothing special, but his first year here he was so important. He’s a career .289 hitter so I’m sure that average will come back to earth over the season, but he’s looking healthy and that’s a GREAT sign. He, along with the addition of Posada and the resurgence of Giambi are really rounding out the lineup. Now if only the starters could start waking up!

Like

Glad to see that Damon maybe is tired of all the criticism. He is finally doing what he is capable of for the pinstripers. I hope he can keep it going.

Knowing our luck, Giambi would tweek his back in the derby. I did vote for him to go to the all-star game, though.

Don’t get me wrong, I like the walk-off wins we are getting. It shows me that this team is not a bunch of big paychecks. It shows me that they want to win. Aside from that, winning a game where your pitching staff allows 11 runs is alot like kissing your sister. Here’s a memo to the pitching staff: Hey, dumbasses, you are finally getting some run support, so that does not give you an excuse to start giving up runs like they’re on clearance at Wal-Mart. Do everyone a favor and step your up game. Does Moose have to do everything?
On that note, before this season began, if you had told me that Hughes would lose his first 4 decisions then get seriously and mysteriously injured, Ian Kennedy would be even more ineffective, Andy PEDitte would be on his way to the worst season of his career, Darrell Rasner would be lights on in all but one of his starts up to this point, Wang would have a 6-0 start but blow all that with his next 6 starts, and that Moose would be among the best pitchers in the AL; I would have laughed in your face.

Like

Giambi has 14 homeruns, leads the Yankees. This is the final year at Yankees stadium, he needs to be in the homerun contest.

I really hope that we could sweep the A’s or at least win the series. Moose is pitching tonight so there is a plus, try and keep his streak going.
But it is agreed chaz, if we ever had the opportunity it is now to get something started. Get a good winning streak in and head on from there.

Like

1 game over .500 and we have the A’s and the Giants to deal with this week. While the A’s once again seem to keep a winning team on the field despite having a minor league calibur payroll, at least the Giants suck. I’m hoping to win the series against the A’s and sweep the Giants. We need to start our “run” now. The offense is clicking, so naturally our pitching has been awful. I hope we can get everyone headed the same direction soon. Are we going to start consistently winning any time soon?

Like

I don’t know about the homerun contest but he is definitely cooking on the field.

Like

Giambi needs to be an all-star instead of Ortiz. Bryan, suggest to him he enters the homerun contest at the stadium, so we have a Yankee to cheer for.
