Another long night in Detroit

This stadium, Comerica Park, played host to one of the least pleasant memories of the ’07 season — an Aug. 24 game that was delayed by rain for four hours and one minute, with first pitch thrown at 11:06 p.m. ET.

The game ended on a walkoff homer at 3:30 a.m. ET the next morning. The losing pitcher? Wouldn’t you know it, it was the lefty taken on Friday by the Padres, Sean Henn.

No rain here tonight, thankfully, but speaking of lefties who once drew interest from San Diego, how would the Yankees like to have a mulligan on Kei Igawa? While I don’t think Igawa pitched as poorly as his line — 3.0 IP+, 11 H, 6 ER — indicates, it’s pretty apparent that the Tigers were salivating to get their rips in against him.

Wilson Betemit’s shoddy defensive play at third base really killed Igawa in the three-run third inning; by my count, there were four balls – two backhanded, one forehanded and one barehanded – that Betemit could have made a play on but didn’t. Igawa is probably going to get at least one more turn through the rotation to prove that this was a fluke, but unless he starts pounding down in the zone more consistently, the jury has to be out.

Any silver lining? Well, Alex Rodriguez took about three dozen grounders on a back field in Tampa, Fla. this afternoon. The Yankees need him more than ever, on both sides of the ball.

Wells won’t be added to the roster right away, he is a month a way.

The problem with Igawawful is that he has already reached his ceiling, he is no more than a minor league pitcher. Just look at his stats. He has good minor league numbers, but horrible major league numbers. This is as good as it gets with Igawawful he isn’t going to get any better than what he is. Last night’s game was a typical scenario for him in the majors to say that he didn’t pitch as bad as his numbers show is really not seeing things for what they are, like I said it was a typical scenario for him.

Wells is going to be a disaster if he comes back just like he was a disaster last season. He got ripped last season, and will get ripped this season. This team has start learning from past mistakes, and stop signing old, mediocre pitchers like Clemens, and Wells. Neither offered anything last season, and neither will be able to eat up innings. This doesn’t need any more “specialists” on it’s roster. What it needs are good quality pitchers who have the talent to pitch effectively in the majors. Again, lets stop accepting mediocrity to solve the team’s problems. Neither “The Savior” nor “The Beer Guzzler” come close to being answers to the team’s problems, they will just add to them they are total garbage. As long as Beta-puke show an inability to hit he doesn’t have any kind of “pop”.

Kennedy has shown in the past that he can get hitters out, he wasn’t pitcher of the year for ’07 for nothing. Also showed he could do it at the major league level. He has nothing left to prove in the minors he will be back up soon. His problems are mental, he’s going to have to pitch at the major league level, he’s not going to do that by pitching in the minors.

I blame Beta-puke for being such a miserable player!!

Who cares if Betamit had no strikeouts in last night’s game? He is still a total waste of a roster spot, and has no trade value, never shown to be much of a hitter. Cashman has rock in his head for trading for that garbage!! Lets stop accepting mediocrity, that’s no way to build a successful team.

Like

“The Savior” has no chance of making the Olympic team, they don’t even want anything to do with him!! Smart move on their part!!

Like

We’re going to keep Ensberg, and wouldn’t be surprised to see the no-talent Beta-puke get cut since he has no value whatsoever. Beta-puke had a bad game last night in the field as well. Yanks were suckers for trading for that fool.

Clemens+Wells+Colon= Total garbage!!!!

Guys, Betemit has been injured. More uselessness added to useless. It’s time for a call up, since Betemit will be plced on the 15 Day DL anyway.

The question that quizzes me is:

Is it going to be Gonzalez that’s called up or a pitcher ( Steven White, Alan Horne ) OR will we see Wells be signed?

Oh, how I love dilemmas!

We’re gonna kept Betemit and release Ensburglar when Arod comes back. Barring a trade, we keep starting Betemit because we think he will have a big hit. Morgan had a terrible day against Cleveland, he may have played his last.

Like

If Colon got a job, why not Wells? He can certainly eat innings and avoid injury! He might also be used as the situational lefty in the pen!

I think Ensburglar is gonna be released.

Great start so far… Jeter got a homerun, and both Abreu and Matsui have singles…

Betemit has played OF and all four IF but is not known for his defense. He looked a lot better at 3B in Thursday’s game in person. I was surprised to see him start over Ensberg against the lefty on Friday!

I am hearing David Wells will be signing if Cashman signs off which he hasn’t yet.

Mike Myers was a good dude. We released him because he was not getting out lefties. Betemit will be cut.

I don’t know about versatility. He cannot catch or play the outfield, does not have the range for middle infield, and is clearly subpar at 3rd. So we can pretty much only stick him on 1st, and we have Giambi, Duncan, and Ensberg

Like

He made some tremendous plays at first. His hot corner skills hurt us bad last night.

Betemit was brought here for his versatility and pop as a left handed batter!

Like

Girardi makes the lineup card and he makes pinch hit decisions. Send Trashcan back to AAA, send Betemit back to the bench. Gonzalez should be starting until Arod comes back.

Like

I blame Girardi for Betemit’s poor defense.
I blame Girardi for ice cold Duncan hitting after Sui was walked.
Girardi is not showing me enough here guys.

Like

Betemit was here for his defense, like Mike Myers was here to get out lefties. Mike Myers couldn’t get out lefties, Betemit couldn’t play defense. We would have had enough runs to win if Betemit makes a play. Bring back Gonzalez, Bring back Clemens instead of Boomer, Igawa gets another shot to proof he can find the zone.

Another issue: DUNCAN, he is a triple A player, he is not gonna come through in that situation, Girardi: you need to pitch hit for DUNCAN there.

Here’s my problem with Igawa vs. Kennedy. Igawa gave up ZERO walks yesterday. All he gave up were hits. Hit after hit after hit. What does that show? He can’t actually get anybody out. Kennedy on the other just kept walking and walking and walking… What does that show? We’re not sure if he can actually get people out. You get the feeling he CAN, but he’s got to learn how to.

Looking past a probable second start for Igawa on Wednesday, there is an off day Monday the 19th then I’d like to see Kennedy back for a start on the 24th. Igawa did keep the ball “in the park” though too many hit the wall in left-center! At least the Rays have left handed bats in Crawford and Pena!

I agree with Matt about White being one of the better options for the Wednesday start, but I think it will be Igawa! White is quietly having a decent season and he’s already on the 40man.

Horne is still hurt, Kennedy goes tomorrow for SWB so can’t be available, Cox is strictly a reliever, and Kontos is too “green.”

Lost in a bad day fielding was a two for four game with the bat and again NO STRIKEOUTS for Betemit! If I’m part of only 5% I’d better post more often!

Curran: Totally agree with you about Gonzalez. What this year ought to be about is the development of these young, hungry players including Gonzalez. Betemit needs to be sent elsewhere. I would not give Igawa another start though. He has been given chance after chance and continues to prove he’s a AAA pitcher. As I have said before eat the money loss and give him a one way ticket back to Osaka. Another pitching blunder by Cashman.

bpark23,

Very Poetic !!! …. I totally agree ! … Both, Kei Igawa and Wilson Betemit were disasters last night … Igawa will get at least one more start to prove he still belongs in the starting rotation; but, if he continues to get the ball “up” in the strike zone, I don’t think he will be in the rotation very long … Then, the Yankees should seriously consider bringng back David Wells. It can’t hurt at this point, just to see how well he can still pitch. And, at least we know he can handle the pressure of pitchnig in New York….Regarding, Wilson Betemit – he should not play any more games at thirdbase, period !!! …He is just not a good fielder at third, and he really doesn’t add much to this Yankees team…Alberto Gonzalez should be brought back up – to stay – as the backup infieder [at all infield positions] ….Gonzalez is an excellent fielder, has great speed, and seems to be a good situational hitter….I think Alberto Gonzalez would be much more valuable to the Yankees then Wilson Betemit !!!

I want Betamit and Igawa gone. I’m pretty sure 95% of the Yankee fanbase does too. So why Cashman, why are they still here.

Bryan,

Quick question. Why are the Yankees so reluctant to bring up Steve White? He has been with the Yanks since being drafted in the 4th Rd of the ’03 Amateur Draft. He has had a solid record while in the minors with a 32-25 3.55 lifetime record, and has never finished a season with an ERA over 4.00. This team seems to want to make mistake after mistake when it comes to bringing up pitchers who don’t seem to be have the same ability or talent like Igawa or Rasner or whoever. With Igawa we already know what to expect in terms of results. I could have told you before tonight’s game how he would do. It’s the same old thing every time they call him up with no real signs of improvement. IS it due to the fact that this team made a big mistake by signing Igawa to a large contract, and it doesn’t want to admit it and hoping for the best by marching him out time after only to get the same results. Has it come down to big contracts speek louder than ability, and talent? IF it is, I can tell you right now, White definitely has that judging by his career numbers. Did I say this was going to be a quick question?

We gave Detroit a good run for their money there in the end. I mean, we shoudln’t even have lost! Duncan smacked a line drive to doomsville and that was that. Too bad we dug ourselves too deep a hole.

Igawa shouldn’t even get a second chance. Kennedy needs to be called back up, might as well have the pitcher with more upside than Igawa up here. Let’s see how Rasner fares against this TEST of a lineup. Not even, more like SATs. He’s going to have to zone verything out mentally and act as if the glove is the only thng that existed, or he’ll have trouble. It’s a tough lineup and these hitters wuill feast on the slightest error.

He has a couple things going for him and it’s that he’s right handed and is a control artist. Hopefully he’ll go out there and his game.
