Sunshine at Yankee Stadium

Hello again everyone from Yankee Stadium, where the weatherman couldn’t have been more wrong about today. It’s an absolutely gorgeous day and I had almost forgot what sunlight felt like. It’s been a long time since Tampa.

Once in a while it’s good to get out on the field and watch batting practice, just to be humbled by the raw power these guys have. Alex Rodriguez hit three balls in a row on top of the netting covering Monument Park, and to watch how fluid his swing is, he made it look absolutely effortless. It’s just amazing to see that pure talent flow.

One person not watching BP today is Joe Girardi, who’s still confined to his office with an upper respiratory infection that apparently is fighting all medications known to man. I’m sure he’s feeling awful about it, but since this is probably the last chance I’ll get to say this … Girardi is now at the 60% attendance mark in his first week on the new job.

Rob Thomson has the reins for a second consecutive day as Andy Pettitte makes his 2008 debut. In a corresponding roster move, Jonathan Albaladejo – hours after throwing 2 2/3 scoreless innings – will make his way up to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (who neither play in Scranton nor Wilkes-Barre, mind you. The stadium is in Moosic, Pa.).

Pettitte blanks ‘em in the first. Enjoy the game, everyone.

Another slow start and no Joe Torre to get us going

I heard Giambi has a sore groin, with Duncan being suspended for two games, lets hope the Yanks do the right thing and start Ensberg at 1B. A team struggling as badly as the Yanks are offensively, don’t need to have a player who can’t hit in the lineup.

The only good thing about all of this, is that all the other teams favored to win their divisions are somewhat struggling as well.

Pettitte allowed 5 runs 3 of which were earned. Which brings up another thing that is a concern which the “D”. At best it was extremely shaky during ST, where this team committed too many errors, and allowed too many unearned runs. The way this team is hitting it can’t afford to do that.

Like

What we saw were the effects of Pettitte not getting the innings in ST to start the season to be an effective pitcher. Once he gets more innings under his belt he should be O.K. It’s still too soon to panic about the pen, and think about calling up guys like Veras who had a bad ST, and Patterson who doesn’t have experience above AA, but lets face it this pen is very shaky at best right now outside of Chamberlain, and Rivera. Another thing just because Kennedy had one bad start doesn’t mean he needs to go back to AAA. Forget about making Ramirez a starter as well, he doesn’t have that type of talent.

Seriously, since when … since when does this lineup not have the capabilities of scoring more than 4 runs? ( which the most we’ve scored, by the way. ) We should have won this game, enough said. Pettitte allowed three runs and we still lost? Mmm mm… I don’t like this at all. Doesn’t matter how well we pitch, we’re not always going to win by one or two, 3-2, 4-3 ballgames. To win, we need leads of three or four. The bullpen is getting roughed up? Of course! We’re already giving them heavy loads of work and it’s only the first week. We need to stop this or it will create a snowball effect. GIRARDI, COME BACK!

You gotta be kiddin me… This offense is stinking and the pitching is wreaking. I hope these guys shake off the rust soon, or the first week of April won’t be the only week seeing us last in the standings.

great now we need a win from Wang & Moose to split a home series with the Rays. Watch out AL East!!

Interesting: New blog sites openly displaying a TYPEPAD affiliation. I discovered that means CENSORSHIP POSSIBLE. And I thought I saw TYPEPAD on the banner of a MLBLOG site too, but now it’s gone. What has happened to FREEDOM OF SPEACH? Granted some abuse occurs, but these guys in Frisco are getting rich offering these insidious tools. In protest we can all boycott such sites!

Still no bats!, It’s de je vous all over again, Same as last year.
Starting the season as the hitless wonders. Pettite didn’t look too sharp at all. Someone mentioned that we’ll start bombing against the Rays, that hasn’t happened. We always seem to have a problem against the lesser known pitchers, and do better against their aces. I know the pen is little spotty, Aside from Hawkins lat night the pen has done a pretty good job.
I’m more concerned w/Andy & Moose. We need them to give us innings and wins…Ian is a rookie, and his start might be explained by his youth and inexperience.
Aybar Homers off Ohlendorf now 6-1 …
“GO YANKEES”

whats the deal with Pena being hit twice and Pettitte is still pitching?

Tough inning for Pettite but he only gave up 2 runs. I agree with you bpark, short of Joba and Mo, I don’t trust this pen. I just hope Petite can give us another 3-4 scoreless innings .

Pena hit twice? Pettitte could be gone with one wild pitch.

Like

The way this is heading, Pettitte may need to go seven scoreless and hand off to Joba.

Like

Duncan with one out, singles to load the bases. Not sure he would have done that with 2 outs.

Anxiety effected Girardi’s immune system and ability to heal quicker?

Matsui 7th pitch of the at bat = safe on throwing error.

Like

Matsui must understand that with 1 out and Duncan following him, he needs to reach base to take pressure off the rookie. Duncan is better served coming up relaxed without trying to avoid being the last out of the inning. Sui has worked the count to 3-2 on 6 pitches.

The Yankees are calling it an upper respiratory infection. Word is he looks better but still obviously isn’t feeling well enough to manage.

Like

Do you have any additional news about Girardi? Is it just the flu or something worse?
