Closing thoughts from Legends Field

Everybody’s ready to get some baseball going, and the Yankees will have their lone intrasquad game of the spring on Wednesday, beginning at 1 p.m. ET. Your starting pitchers from Legends Field will be Mike Mussina and Jeff Karstens. It’s a safe bet that Reggie Jackson, who arrived in camp Tuesday, will find a way to be involved.

Joba Chamberlain was swinging a long athletic sock around his shoulder with three baseballs in it. Though it’d probably make a handy way to ward off a mugger, Joba is collecting autographs to help decorate his son’s bedroom. Chamberlain said he’s already scored signatures from most of the star players on the Yankees, as well as a few jerseys.

Tino Martinez still needs some work with the fungo bat. Martinez’s job was to hit ground balls to Jason Giambi, Shelley Duncan and Wilson Betemit this morning, but I spotted at least two balls whizzing through the right side and landing for hits out in right field. It appears some habits are just too hard to break.

Joe Girardi is heading out to dinner with the beat reporters for a getting-to-know-you night out. These events are always off-the-record, so don’t expect a hit-by-hit account of what the skipper has to say, but it’s a classy gesture by Girardi and we appreciate it.

Maybe Tino’s looking to interject himself into the already overcrowded 1B/DH mix by reminding everyone he can still hit. He’s already probably the best defensive first baseman in camp!

Clemens told CNN SI that he didn’t plan on making a quick visit to Tampa. Can you imagine him pulling up at the offices on Himes Ave? That would be a circus….

I read a Times article that said Sean Henn is out of minor league options. If Igawa is lefty specialist, Henn will finally be sent packing. I wish Bruney was also out of options.

Did anyone win the opp. to get Premium Tix this morning…i had like 10 people sign up and no one i knew won =(

Come on Bryan, make sure to spill the beans!

Hey Bryan,

do you need a media pass to watch practice or can any nut show up at Steinbrenner’s field?

I don’t really get the Tino thing. They said they wanted to get younger with Phillips. Phillips is no longer there. It makes me wonder if even though Tino was good friends with Jeter and Posada, if there was some conflict with Giambi?

OH YEAH! 3 more days until Spring Training! NO, time did not fly. It’s about time we have some **** baseball! Let’s DO IT!

Good News:
Girardi complimented Brian Bruney not only for a “very good arm,” but also for losing 20 pounds before camp.

bpark, isn’t Tino at camp as a guest instructor, along with the likes of Yogi, Gator, Goose, Mr. October, etc.? I think that’s what’s going on with Tino at camp, not him trying out for the Yankees. Remember Tino was a rock at first, an extremely good defensive 1B, so he’s probably got some good knowledge to pass on, not only to Giambi, but to Ensberg, Duncan, etc.

Am I the only one who senses a very real hunger and desire in camp? I’m so excited about this season I can’t stand it! BRING ON THE GAME!

My thoughts exactly, rcn. Lets play some baseball!

I saw Joba on JRIB yesterday. He seems like a real class act, like he is genuinely ready to embrace whatever role the Yankees need him to play. He did say in not so few words that he would rather be a starter. He also was very frank about the whole steroid/hgh controversy talking about how ballplayers shouldn’t beat around the bush when asked about it. I am really starting to like this kid even more than I did before. He’s close to becoming one of my favorite players on the Yankee roster.

I have a very good feeling about this year. I’m not saying we are a lock for the World Series, but I will be stunned beyond belief if we don’t take a serious run at it. But then again, that is what makes being a Yankee fan so awesome. We are in the middle of “rebuilding” the team, and we are still go to get a good look at it! GO FREAKING YANKEES!!!!!!!!!

I’m so fired up!!!!!!

JRIB is Jim Rome is Burning, fyi. I am a huge Jim Rome clone. I’ve been listening to his radio show since 98. He rarely if ever has Yankee ballplayers on his show, but it was awesome to see Joba on the program.

Come one, come all. Gates are open for the fans.
