Jeter, meet Joba

The Yankees are done for the day here at Legends Field. A lot of batting practice and pitchers fielding practice today in preparation for tomorrow’s live batting practice drills.

Joe Girardi was telling us that he always used to hate that day because it involves a catcher inside the batting cage, and "you feel like you’ve got nowhere to go." The pitchers aren’t fond of working with the L-screen, and I can’t imagine anyone is particularly looking forward to facing Joba Chamberlain. But it makes good theatre for the rest of us.

Alex Rodriguez claims that Derek Jeter is going to have an MVP type season because he reported to camp in great shape. Well, that’s one way to deflect a controversy. We didn’t get to quiz Jeter on it but there’s always tomorrow. A-Rod also noticed that Bobby Abreu is trimmer and is penciling him in for a monster year as well. Optimism reigns at Yankee camp.

One other note for the day. Before I headed down to Spring Training, I was checking out the Ticketmaster site to see if there were any decent concerts or shows to go see. The only thing I came up with was a Van Halen concert last Monday at the St. Pete Times Forum, and while I really would have liked to go, I’m glad I didn’t buy the tickets because we all were hit hard with the Andy Pettitte press conference.

I was telling another reporter about this when Jason Giambi – a hair metal man if there ever was one – overheard and didn’t help my lament. Giambi saw the show in Las Vegas and said David Lee Roth can still cut it as a frontman. I’d have to imagine that going out with the Big G would probably rank as an experience that you’d never forget … or perhaps one you’d struggle to remember.

Good to see all the boys being so nice! Optimism is a good thing.

“..Jason Giambi – a hair metal man if there ever was one..”

lol, rockin like Dokken!

Whoa-oh, Breakin the chains!!!!!

I saw David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar a few years back – best of both worlds as you hear all the classic Van Halen stuff – my buddies and I chugged a beer everytime DLR did a flying legkick…needless to say we drank a TON of beer…so yes, DLR can still cut it! Atta boy Giambino!

I once slaughtered several people and then made a jacket from thier skins.

Just an off the cuff comment that I wonder how many will take literally.

Here’s a thought. Any, that’s ANY, human being that took either of A-Rod’s statements from yesterday literally is both an IDIOT and a LOSER. I’m not particularly fond of A-Rod outside of his skill wtih a bat, but even I am not so desperate for ammo that I take off the wall comments and attempt to make news from them. What a bunch of desperate losers.

Bryan….if you like “Butt Rock” as I call it…theres always Def Leppard, Styx, and REO Speedwagan coming up at the Borgata…and you dont even have to tailgate, just get free drinks inside the casino…now thats a deal!

I’m game, as long as we don’t have to call it Butt Rock.

I love Van Halen. I love “Jump.” I was born in 1970.

Hey Bryan, (or anyone else)

Can someone explain the arbitration process to me? I think it’s somewhat relevant with the Cano contract, lack of Wang contract, and the record setting $10 million contract for Howard. How do they decide on the contract value? Is it supposed to be fair market value or is it supposed to be slightly lower? What makes a player eligible?

Thanks

Can someone please tell me when are there arms comming up? the Alan Horne’s and the J.B. Cox’s the Alan Brackman’s and the rest?

If they pull Joba out of the pen they better have something better than just LaTroy Hawkins and Farnsworth?

.

A player is eligible for salary arbitration if he:

(a) is ineligible for free agency

(b) is without a contract

(c) cannot agree with his current team on a new contract

(d) has been on a major league roster or disabled list for at least three years.

“Super Two” exception[3] – A player with at least two years of experience may be eligible for salary arbitration if he:

(a) Meets the first three requirements from above

(b) Played in the majors for at least 86 days in the previous season

(c) Is among the top 17 percent for cumulative playing time in the majors amongst others with at least 2 years, but less than 3 years experience

In this process, the player and the team both submit a salary offer for a new contract; the arbitrator chooses one number or the other, whichever is thought to be most “fair” given comparable wages among players with similar ability and service time. Players thus rely on arbitration and free agency to increase their salaries.

Players eligible for neither free agency nor salary arbitration are very seldom offered contracts for much more than the league minimum salary, as the player has no recourse to try to obtain a better salary elsewhere. For this reason, in the first three major league years of their careers, players accept comparatively low salaries even when their performance is stellar. This is an accepted practice; talented, young players are usually content to “pay their dues” in this way and earn a chance to negotiate for more in their fourth year. Occasionally, a team may wish to sign a player in his second or third year to a long-term contract, for which negotiation can take place for a much higher salary.

itzdaddy,

You can expect to see Chamberlain start the year in the starting rotation not the pen. Brackman maybe at least three years away as he is recovering from TJ surgery and isn’t scheduled to pitch until ’09. Don’t be surprised to see Cox, and Horne in the pen either later this season or next season at the very latest. As for the rest of the high-end prospects, don’t expect to see them for at least two seasons.
