Yankees make Posada signing official

The club has scheduled a 3 p.m. ET conference call to make Jorge Posada available. Hopefully Brian Cashman will be on the call as well to take a few questions. I’m sure there’s a topic or two that he might be able to shed some light on — one is a left-handed ace in the Twin Cities…

YANKEES SIGN CATCHER JORGE POSADA TO A FOUR-YEAR CONTRACT

The New York Yankees announced today they have signed switch-hitting catcher Jorge Posada to a four-year contract. Posada, 36, batted a career-high and team-high .338 (171-for-506) in 2007 with the Yankees, ranking fourth in the American League in batting average.  He earned his fifth career All-Star team selection and his fifth career Silver Slugger Award after also establishing a career high in hits and doubles (team-high 42) to go along with 20 home runs and 90 RBI in 144 games played (125 starts at C, five at DH and one start at 1B).

he is the best catcher in the whole world (looks a little like the mole in ICE AGE I & II) but great for him

Hip Hip…I’m glad there will be stability for the pitching staff for atleast another 3 years..

This is great news! It has occurred to me that Jorge’s signing will not be lost on Minnesota’s ace left-hander. I live in Minnesota and Joe Mauer’s a good kid but Santanna can upgrade his batterymate (and entire offense) if Bill “Mr. No” Smith (Twinkies’ GM) gets back to reality in his expectations for return on investment.

With Jorge’s stats and WS rings, maybe Cooperstown can be a reality some day.

Keep the good news coming!

“That is GOOOOOD news!!!!” LOL.

Haren, who went 15-9 with a 3.07 ERA last season, is signed to a modest contract that pays him $4 million next year, $5.5 million in 2009 and a team option for 2010 worth $6.75 million. -Add this up. He was on the A’s as well, terrible team. If my math is correct, which I won’t vouch for..One season of Santana= 3 years of Haren and he is 27. This way we don’t have to lose 2 starting players and two prospects plus 150 million.. man that deal is sounding worse and worse the more I think about it. Did anyone watch Paul Byrd pitch? He ain’t no Santana but he pitched well enough to win. I’d rather have 5 starting A level pitchers then 1 A+, 3 A and 1 B- pitcher.

Yanks2003,

Per your Haren comment. This may seem counterintuitive in the world of baseball, but because Haren is so ‘cheap’ (or atleast comparitevely to the rest of the 15 game winner field) that his asking price is HUGE. Billy Beane isn’t dumb, he’s probably just as slick as Mark Shapiro — this guy knows the value of Haren and will take every advantage of the situation to land a 3,4,5 starter for their rotation. My thought is that Haren will cost close to Santana. Maybe a Kennedy with Jackson, Tabata, and another pitching prospect.

Remmember this when dealing with the A’s; they dealt Mulder & Hudson (two premiere pitchers at the time) a year before they became free agents and still managed to make the playoffs with the talent they received in return.

He’s a slick GM, no doubt about it.

I have said before Santana is a must for the Yankees, But after further review, the yankees can go into the season as is. They started bad but they did fight to the end. Andy P. comes back and pitch like he did;a plus, but andy is playing the clemens game, more money for you if you wait. I say “Lets Roll” with what we have, make sure everyone is in shape before spring training. Do like football have a couple of workouts to get a gauge were the players conditioning is at. These guys were out of shape at the start of the season, even Petite was winded in the beginning of season.

yanksrox hit the nail on the head. Haren will not come cheap and will cost somewhere near Santana. He is younger and cheaper, as hank has shown he’s not afraid to overpay(in cash), Santana would be the better bet.

We don’t have to get him, though. We don’t HAVE to be in the playoffs every year, we might just win it all 3 years down the road.

Still would love to see Johan in pinstripes.

Mduncan:

I love the idea of shaping these guys up.

Example: Johnny Damon came into training camp something like 20lbs overweight — this was a major part of the problem to his slow start. He’s still a top flight guy when in shape and he showed us that in the 2nd hald.

Mussina: the guy needs to get into better shape before season, otherwise he’ll lose his wind like he did late in the season.

Give them ALL the Shilling treatment, and be sure they weigh-in throughout the summer and bulk up on the right muscles.

Can we start the season already?

Mussina could get in the best shape ever but what he really needs is for someone to change his birth certificate. 39 is 39. He needs the Fountain of Youth.

As for Pettitte, as Posada stated, Posada is calling him once a week and as of now, Pettitte would retire.

I want Andy back and think the Yanks NEED him back. Should the Santana deal happen, I want the 1-2-3 to be Santana-Wang-Pettitte and ease the kids in at 4 and 5. Getting Santana won’t mean as much in 2008 w/out Andy. But right now, Andy is by no means a sure thing to come back in 2008–Santana or no Santana.

just wanted to say: i have nothing to say.

It seems to me that we are getting away from even wanting to pay such a hefty price just to get a “name” in here. I LIKE THAT. I would still be willing to listen to a deal for Johan if it doesn’t involve Hughes, Cano, Wang, Chamberlain. That means Kennedy and Melky(unfortunately) are the trade bait. That said, with pitchers like Bedard, and Haren apparently on the block, why not pursue talent like these fellas, and tell Minnesota to stick it? Bedard is a QUALITY lefty that won’t cost us NEAR what Santana will, and maybe we can work something out with Oakland to get Haren too. Our 2008 rotation could look like this:

Bedard

Wang

Haren

Hughes

Chamberlain

we lose a slough of second tier talent (e.g. Ohlendorf, Clippard, Tabata, DeSalvo) and Farny to get Bedard, and Melky and Kennedy to get Haren. If this rotation is the end result….LOOK OUT AL!

i live in eric bedard countrym they would try their best to hold him here

talk tomorrow

It’s too soon to say Haren is almost as good as Santana. Last seasson was a breakout season for him, but he has never posted Santana-like numbers. The A’s would most likely go for hitters who are major league ready or close to it. Neither Tabata nor Jackson are.

Haren is no Santana but he is really good and has always looked good. I remember him in the playoffs before he went to the A’s and he was lights out. He will continue to do well. He would have the same number of wins if he was on the Yankees just like Wang relies on.

I would never say that Haren is as good as Santana. Frankly, NOONE is. That said, I like the idea of going after 2 really good starters, rather than getting one utterly awesome one for the same price.

RSL, I’ve always said that Jorgie looks a lot like a mouse. In fact, I had no idea that Feival was the catcher for the New York Yankees. Except this Feival doesn’t go “West”, he goes “Yard”.

Appearing in Stadiums all around the U.S. in 2008:

An American Tale: Feival Goes Yard

Yes, ut Haren won’t be as expensive as you might think.

Being a native of the Bay Area in California…I hope if any trades are made, they go to the Giants or the A’s. This is getting irrelevant but would you trade Lincecum for Melky and Kennedy? That guy in unreal. Really young, but he is dominant. The Yankees need to make some huge trade that nobody even thought was possible. Kazmir or someone. I used to be really excited for Santana but we seriously will have NO centerfielder if a trade isn’t made soon.

The Giants are going to have to rebuild their entire offense as all they have right now are injury-prone, players who are well past their prime, and nothing but role players on their bench. The Giants have let their minor league system stagnate in terms of developing position players, thus they have no players they can bring up through their system. I just see where they have any choice but to trade a pitcher like Lincecum or Lowery to get quality players. They also have to tweak their bullpen as well. I always laugh when I hear Giants fans say their team should go afte A-Rod. Yeah right!! Like the Giants could compete with teams like the Yankees for A-Rod’s services. The Giants only had two chances of getting A-Rod, slim, and none, and slim left the country a long time ago. IF you’re a Giants fan as well yanks, then I hate to tell you this but the GIants are at the very least 5 years from being a playoff team again.

If Aaron Rowand and Andruw Jones sign with other teams before we can make the Johan deal a reality, will CAN’T make the trade AT ALL. There just won’t be anyone to play center. I don’t want to see Damon patrolling center with his aging carcass, and limp-noodle arm. And if Minnesota wants Cano in the trade, F__k that!

I just want to introduce my self, as a yanks fan living in Bean town. Can’t wait for the season to start. What going on reports are flying saying Bsox got the inside scoop on the Santana hurl.

fgedeon, it must feel good to be Sox fam these days huh. I mEAN, the Red Sox, Patriots, Bruins, Celtics. All teams t the top right now. Boston sports fans must be feelin real cocky right now. Oh, not to mention Santana is all but locked up, specially with that trade offer. Personally, I think the Twins would rather give him away to the Red Sox, than give a fair-square deal to the Yanks. ppffff. Coco Crisp with lester is better than Hughes or Kennedy for Cabrera, I mean we’re actually giving these guys a choice between two of ourbest pitchers. We should call them the Minnesota ********
