Torre wins #2000, 10-3

CanoHard to believe that this one was once a pitchers duel, but the Yankees put up nine runs with their last six outs to blow it open in a laugher and take the series, three games to one.

The Yankees are off and running for New York with their second consecutive series victory, and all things considered, a pretty good 6-4 road trip to Toronto, Boston and Chicago.

Joe Torre became the first man in baseball history to achieve 2,000 wins as a manager and 2,000-plus hits as a player, tucking the final out baseball from the Yankees’ 10-3 victory into his back pocket at very windy U.S. Cellular Field on Thursday.

Mike Mussina limited the White Sox to one run and four hits over six-plus innings, throwing 79 pitches, and Alex Rodriguez clubbed a grand slam to highlight the Yankees’ eruption against a very ineffective Chicago bullpen that seems to have Ozzie Guillen fraying at the end of his rope.

Now, the Yankees return to New York to rejoin Andy Pettitte – who flew ahead of the team – and then Roger Clemens on Saturday for a weekend series with the Pittsburgh Pirates. See you out at the Stadium.

Wow, what a game. Moose was great. Mo was the closer we know and love. And A-rod…I burst out laughing after he hit the grand slam. And I couldn’t stop. His numbers (especially his numbers in the 9th inning) are so ridiculous that I couldn’t believe he could actually hit ANOTHER 9th inning home run, no less a grand slam.

And to think, in the 8th inning I started to worry that Farnsworth would blow it…

yeah, pretty encouraging to see this team step up and win 6 of their last 8

thoughts…

1)moose–with seemingly every yank fan (except me and my uncle) calling for mike mussina to be relegated to the pen, he delivered tonight…just calm down everybody, like i said, he’s fine (and he’s certainly not going anywhere cuz there’s no one better to replace him)

2)bobby abreu–i think we can officially call him hot right now…A-Rod’s slam is making the headlines, but abreu’s go-ahead two-run double in the 8th was the bigger hit…clutch by him

3)jeter/posada…poor guys get only a sorta-off day…can anybody tell me if jorge has sat out even one entire game this year?

Go Yankees

First the bad stuff.
AGAIN! DAMMIT! Mr. Torre takes Moose out in the 7th, after 79 effective pitches and brings in whom? Our “Lefty Specialist” who does what? FREAKING NOTHING! His stats as a lefty specialist STINK TO HIGH HEAVEN! He HAS to be worse than 30/70 when it comes to getting that left handed batter out in that situation. Granted, if the score were 3-0 or 4-0 instead of 1-0, perhaps Moose is left in. But I think the hook was pulled far too early last night.

2nd. Am I the only one who thinks Farnsworth is showing us the pitcher he TRUELY is? His career ERA is almost 4.5 and with the exception of 1 year with the Braves (the year before we got him), he was mediocre at best. And we sent Igawa down?? Sheesh!

3. Can we REALLY afford to have an .091 bat in our lineup? We’re already giving away Meinkewiczswczitzcz’s spot (ok, bad example but you know what I mean)

Ok. Now the good stuff. Moose pitched the way he can. Not overpowering but pinpoint control. That’s what he’s always done. It stinks that he didn’t get the win last night. He deserved it.

I will offer a mea culpa on Abreu. Whatever was affecting him early on seems to have abated and he is back to the level of performance we saw last year. 2 ribbies, 3 runs scored and another walk. Thats half the total. It would have been nice to let DJ and Jorge have the WHOLE night off but when you’re batting .356 and the one that replaces you is batting .091, well… somethings wrong. Even Fasano managed to hit at least .200. The importance of last night’s win can’t be lost given the SUCHS 1-0 thrilla.

I agree with rcngolf99. Torre is lucky this one turned out in his favor. Taking Mussina after 79 pitches is total bull @#$%^&. Sure there was no outs with men on the corners but Mussina could have done no worse than our “great lefty specialist”. Mussina was pissed and so are alot of Yankee fans!!! Farnsworth,Vizcaino, and Myers need to go. It’s time to pass the torch to the kids in the minors. They couldn’t possibly do any worse than what we have now!!!

I aree with passing the torch to the younger arms. Fransworth looked like he would blow another one until Rivera came to the rescue.

I couldn’t be happier to see those three (Fransworth, Viscaino, and Myers) gone forever after this season. If I was the manager, I would have left Mussina in to finish the 7th.

Although I am NOT a Moose fan(I’d like to see a series of good starts all the way through the summer, first) I would be *issed too. Myers is a has been, period. Farnsworthless is a JOKE!!! I agree bring in the kiddie corps and unload these bums. Enough, Joe.

No, Meyers is a never was. He’s maanged to bop around the league doing only one thing with a career era over 4. IP per games is about 1/2 if that tells you about his use(lessness). Pieces of seasons with teams, never more than two complete in a row. When you’re only brought in for one maybe two batters once in a while and your ERA is that high, something aint right.

I remember back when Pedro was in Boston and you knew once he hit 100 pitches he would self-destruct, making him a 6 inning pitcher. I see the same trend unfortunately with Moose, except he seems to be in the 80-pitch realm. Maybe Torre should’ve left him in last night, but maybe Guidry and crew are on to the 80-pitch thing that has been occurring all season with Moose…
As for Nieves and his .091 average, he hits the ball hard most of the time, and the hits will fall. He only gets 3-4 at bats a week, it’s tough to get in a groove, and when Posada is hitting like he is, Nieves will get less chances. I think by the end of the year we won’t be complaining about Nieves. He’s on the younger side, he plays solid Defense, the pitchers like him, and he plays hard. The hits will come, he’s not a wash-up like Mientkiewicz.

Myers, ugh. I CANNOT stand him – he makes $2million to get one stinking hitter out, and the only lefty I think he’s gotten out all season is junky Brad Wilkerson. I throw right-handed and am convinced I can get more left-handed hitters out for Myers, and I won’t cost Steinbrenner nearly as much money!

Every time I see that soft throwing piece of tihs Myers come in I ******** cringe!! When are the Yanks gonna tell him to hit the road!! There has to be a corpse out there somewhere better them him. If I were a left handed hitter I would LOVE to see the “specialist” come in. All he does is pump up batters averages. Farnsworth well all I can say is he blows!!! Good to see a win but those two pitchers should be given a one way plane ticket to anywhere in the lower 48.

goffcg25 you’re as blind as a bat. Get a cane and a guide dog for you dope. Mussina is not alright compared to his past performances in the past. If you consider his entire performance this season as him being fine, then you don’t know the first thing about basball. He has been mediocre at best this season, and his skills are deteriorating. Get a clue you idiot!! Just because he had one good start against a struggling team doesn’t mean he is fine. So wake up!!!! He hasn’t looked right all season.

You guys are right about Farnsworth. He has the stuff of a closer at best, but he has never shown he has the mental makeup to be a quality closer not to mention a good set up man going all the way back to his days as a Cub, that’s why they got of him. As long as he can’t straighten out his head you will continue to see the performances he has been having, and will be nothing more than just “another” arm. The only reason the Yanks keep him is because he can thrw as hard as he does. As for Myers, he is nothing more than a specialist called in to face one or two batters at a time. The Yanks knew that when they got him. He is what he is nothing more.

matt saiki, i guess we’re just going to go back and forth all year

it was a no-win for moose last night…if he’d given up 5 runs, you’d be all over him…and if he gave up 1 run, like he did, you brush it off and say the sox can’t hit…which is true (worst BA in majors), but if mussina was really washed up and done, then any team could hit him…this is still the major leagues and they still have guys like thome, dye, konerko, and iguchi…all good to great hitters

anyway, just wait and see with moose ok? if i’m wrong, then i’ll be the first to admit it, but i feel fine with mussina

as far as farnsworth, you (and everybody else) are right…i’m so sick of the guy, you can’t trust him to hold anything…and i’d rather see sean henn than mike myers

but you guys need to give scott proctor credit for last night…he got us out of that 7th inning mess
